Never heard of 826DC?
826DC is a writing center in Washington, DC that provides free tutoring, educational programming, and writers' workshops for kids in DC ages 6-18. It is housed in the Museum of Unnatural History in the Columbia Heights. 826DC is the newest of eight national chapters across the US. (You may be familiar with their other branches housed in: the Pirate Supply store in San Francisco, Time Travel Mart in LA, Super Hero Supply store in Brooklyn, Boring Store in Chicago, Space Travel Store in Seattle, the Big Foot Research Center in Boston, or the Robot Supply Store in Ann Arbor.) If you're ever in the neighborhood, stop by the store and pick up a bottle of unicorn tears or a bottle of utter darkness. Dillon volunteers there part time, so you can say hello to her too! Check them out on facebook.

For their first anniversary, 826DC is celebrating and fundraising for the entire month of October. They've set a fundraising goal of raising $826 per day throughout the month of October. Please help them meet their goal so the children of Washington, DC have a bright, shiny future!

IT'S WEDDING SEASON!

Check out a small sampling of the new collection we're sending to the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

We're sending them some funky sterling silver and vintage lucite pieces from our Orion and Norma Jean lines to complement their upcoming Philip Guston exhibit. Guston (1913-1980) was a Canadian-born, American-raised painter, and is known best for his abstract expressionistic figurative paintings. The folks at the Phillips think our Orions and Norma Jeans would complement his colorful works nicely, and we agree. Check out the exhibit if you're in the area!

The Downtown Holiday Market starts this Friday and I and the rest of the poppigirls will be there...well Dillon won't. She's on a sailboat in the Caribbean until next week....

We are in booth #33 and we will be there for the duration- December 3rd -23rd. I am so excited to be back. I know..its cold and that last year we got our first taste of the snowpocolypse on December 18th with over 18" of snow overnight, BUT I'm not the type to panic. I like snow. I enjoy the break from the monotony of the daily grind here at poppishop. I'll get to be outside! see a bunch of my friends and fellow vendors!

Hello Lovelies,

I realize the poppi girls have once again been neglecting our blog-- we're sorry! We've been busy pumping out a bunch of new work, but we miss you guys so I decided to combine a few of my favorite things--my iphone 4 hipstamatic camera, bright happy jewelry, the outdoors, and pictures of myself-- and say hello.

I wanted to show you a few of the things we've been working on... We're getting ready to add a bunch of new pieces to the website www.poppishop.com but *spoiler alert* here is a little sneak peek...

I'm wearing a pair of twisted earrings made of vintage lucite and sterling silver, and three (that's right, THREE--go big or go home) of my favorite new poppi rings.

The red petal ring is called "Rough Night" because it is a combination of reds and looks like my half-worn-off lipstick after a rough night of waiting tables (By the way, thank you for supporting poppi so I can make jewelry instead of waiting tables. Seriously. I hate waiting tables.)

The xlg multi-colored ring in the middle is called "Murano" because it reminds us of the amazingly beautiful, bright, brilliant colors of stained glass that Dawn and I saw when we visited Italy. (Dawn's baby brother lives in Naples and I studied abroad in Rome...)

The bottom ring is called "Fish Tank." I am the lone poppi girl who isn't a "dog person," (that's a whole other blog post) but I do love fish. When I was in college, one of my friends was moving and couldn't take his pet fish, a South American Cichlid, so he gave it to me. Of course, I thought my new fishy needed a few friends, so I upgraded and got a bigger tank and got him some buddies. I didn't realize, however, that there would be a love connection and the next thing I know, I've got one hundred tiny little baby fish and some kind of crazy full on guerrilla war between the mom and dad and other fish in the tank (for the record, Cichlid males have some seriously poor parenting skills).

Long story short, I ended up spending a huge chunk of my student loans on more and more tanks and gravel and little castles and a huge amount of time cleaning all these tanks during breaks between classes and the aforementioned dreaded crabhouse restaurant shifts (where I, ironically, served fish all night long). I was always a little hesitant to clean the tanks, though, because I love the colors and patterns of algae that grew on the walls of the glass. I had to finally get rid of all my tanks (and pass them on to some other sucker) but I think of my old pets often and fondly when I wear this ring.

Anyway, we hope you guys enjoy all the new stuff we've been putting our little hearts and soul into lately. We've been working overtime to get the site together before Christmas. Stay tuned!

Here is a nice write up in the Mount Vernon Gazette , a Connection newspaper, about the Torpedo Factory Art Center, featuring our visiting artist program.

So, last spring, I was elected VP of Marketing here at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. I am stoked about this.
I have already, with the help of my secret agent graphics girl, gotten a kick ass, in-house marketing brochure together. I have decided to go with the whole Torpedo Factory theme and titled it "Bombs Away" I am hoping to get everyone in the building excited, hopeful and empowered to take control of their own destiny and success.
Last Friday I gave a workshop on using Facebook to promote yourself, your art and hopefully, improve your business. I was totally surprised at the number of people who attended. From what I can tell, it was really well received and people seem excited. YAY!
Anyway... I am excited to get a chance to test some of my material that I will be using this fall at Towson....

I know, this is long over due, but finally, downloaded my pictures from a trip I took to Italy last summer. that is the down side of 8 GB SD cards - they don't fill up.....
anyway, last summer I went to Italy and coordinated a few trunk shows with the help of my sister-in-law Julie.

OK, the story is that I kind of hijacked my friend's ipod and have been shuffling it all day. I came across Yimino and I immediately googled them and bought/ downloaded all I could find. A chill, happy, kind of retro sound....that seamlessly floats from innocent bliss to dark pockets in my head...whatever. I can get lost in it and listening to it puts my head in a good place.

Lindsay, one of the infamous poppigirls, just works for us for the money. Her heart, soul and god given talent is down with the mud people. By that I mean, she is a mad crazy ceramist. After graduating from Alfred, she has been keeping a studio at Red Dirt, a collective run by Margaret Boozer. If you get the chance, check out Lindsay's work this month at the Brand New Brentwood Art Center....

Yesterday morning I answered the poppi phone, something I typically don't do on my day off.
Anyway, when the woman introduced herself as being from the Express, I kind of was put off because I had been getting sales calls from the advertising department asking if I wanted to buy an an in the issue that they were doing that was going to feature Old Town Alexandria. But as she talked, she wanted to know if I was going to be in at my studio at the Torpedo Factory, since she was asked to do a few shots because they were going to feature me in the Old Town issue...now, that's more like it....an editorial...YAY!!
I have no idea what they're going to say...but a picture is worth a thousand words. I will post it here and on facebook when it comes out.

ok, I met the most amazing woman at a show I did last fall...Danamarie Hosler. This woman ROCKS! She does it all... amazing illustrations, fun felted stuff, hand made cards and valentines. She knits funky wear-ables as well as free form knitted animals that she sculpts from thin air....totally wild, fun and adorable! anyway, she's been nominated for a poppie!!!

Ok, its two weeks into 2010 and, honestly, we've been taking it easy.
but not for long! The New York International Gift Fair is just a nano second away and we've been gearing up. I came up with a new necklace / earring design and I must say, I kind of like it. there are new rings, and as promised, we are photographing everything to update the website really soon. we were shooting for the update to be launched this month, but it looks like it will be February. just in time for valentine's day.

My last day the Market was friday and, boy, did I luck out....the snow was just starting as the last of my booth was being loaded into my car. The city was totally shut down yesterday due to the crazy winter storm.....I must admit, I was a little disappointed that the "thundersnow" never transpired.
My heart goes out to those who are still doing the market and those who have to breakdown /set up in the mess that is now F street... I cannot imagine....

Metro is back and running...streets are passable, but be careful.

We, poppi's extened family (minus Sherill - ☹), caravan'ed it down to Goochland Virginia to go to the Elizabeth Kates Day Plant Sale at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women. We lovingly refer to it as Prison Day.

The trip:
we left my house at 10am and then stopped in at the Torpedo Factory to pick up the Virgina poppigirls and Suzanne (an amazing woman who works at the Art League School with Tiffany) and my friends Tracey and Wifey. Anyway, we loaded into two cars and a borrowed van from the Art League and scooted off down 95 towards Richmond.
Stopped off to get some food and gas around fredricksburg. Here is a shot of the Art League's van with a plastic bag caught in its back tire. the gas station equivalent of have TP on your shoe... Aww..Art League Van.... why you gotta embarrass us like that?

Like I said, we stopped for lunch...and then went to Prison. Now, "prison" conjures up a certain image. The VCCW is not like that AT ALL.
No real "gate" per say, and not a lot of bars or fences or barbed wire. It looks like a college campus in a small town.

seriously, this is the prison.
Anyway, cameras were not allowed, so no pictures of the crazy greenhouse or the incredible plant selection or of the annual membership dinner that followed, but, needless to say...it was great!

About Elizabeth Kates Foundation:
this is an organization that educates and mentors women in the Correctional System. They provide scholarships, work programs (horticultural and vocational) and support enabling women to really turn their lives around. Women who go through their program have ZERO percent of recidivism. CRAZY!!! they've been doing this since the 60's, I think. There is not a lot in information online about them - they are still stuck in the 60's. I think I need to donate a website to them. any body want to help? (I've got NO web skills). On Sunday -I started a Poppi Shop profile. I've have a poppi addicts group page and a poppi shop fan page on facebook for a while, but, for some reason, I could not tap the poppi audience. I mean, I had followers and fans, but I just felt that the poppigirl didn't know about either. Anyway, I started the page and then, sent out invites to all of the people who are signed up for my mailing list. I felt a little weird doing that- kind of SPAM-y, you know...anyway, it turned out to be the exact right thing to do. Within 48 hours Poppi Shop has 290+ friends and more accept my friend request everyday. It is pretty nuts. Thank you to everyone and let me know what you want to see - more action shots, more events, whatever - post it here or on facebook.

I CANNOT make one ring that looks like this. You can stack multiple rings to get this effect.

I am pretty sure the pricing is as follows...

I think it arrived exactly one month after the last one. It was post marked Northern Virginia - I could not read the date. I thought the images on the back were from an old ad, but, It seems like they were printed off of the internet, since the back of the paper is blank. More clues ......

Studio Update....

Well, the orders are almost ALL done. Can you believe it? 173 orders (and counting) and we only have 24 more to go!!! Thanks again for such an incredible response to the crazy April sale.
Last Friday, when the light began to shine at the end of the tunnel, I sat down at the bench and started to re-make a ring I lost. Long story short, something new came out. And here it is. How can I describe the happiness it brings to me to make new work???
These rings are a blast to make and are going to be ONE -OF- A-KIND.

One-of-a-kind means that these are hand fabricated and constructed by hand. Each ring is individual and even though similar rings may come into being, the same one will not. The sterling bands are traditional, in that they are sized and solid. These rings cannot be ordered or sized, and will be for sale until sold. I still have to make a few more to figure out the pricing, but it looks like the 5-ballers will be around $135 and the mega-ball will be somewhere between $290 and $350 - depending on the number of Lucite balls.

As you know, the photography has been my obstacle, and it really will be worked out sometime within the next few weeks. When that is done, poppishop will be finally updated. Its long over due (the last update was in October!! - YIKES!)

Saturday Night Derby was WOW!!!

OK- -Saturday I had a most incredible night! I went to the Charm City Roller Grils vs. the Gotham Girls bout in Baltimore. I knew the bout was going to be amazing because Gotham is #1 and Charm City has been dying for some real competition. The evening did not disappoint. It was fast. It was hard and even though Charm City lost - they did not give it away.
It made me fall even more in love with Dolly Rocket and Joy Collision. I also saw, for the first time, Just Carol, who was a crazy wiry hot mess, crawling through the pack like a spider who smells blood.
I am definitely not a commentator, so read all about it here.

I mean, just LOOK at Dolly.

Secret Domo Postcard Stalker

Postcards started arriving about two weeks before my birthday. They are of Domo Kun. He is a mascot for a Japanese television station. Anyway, 2 or 3 postcards came every day. They all have different writing styles on the back. Sometimes like a 14-year-old girl, w/ long elaborate stories. Sometimes cryptic, serial killer scrawl. None of them were signed. Some only had pictures/ drawings on the back. They came from all over the Washington DC area. Multiple postcards were mailed on the same day. They were sent to both my Torpedo Factory studio and my home. As my birthday got closer, the postcards got more & more frequent. The girls and I thought that surely there would be a cathartic moment, a big surprise for my birthday. Or at least, for my birthday, the sender would reveal themselves. But, no. 29 postcards later, I have no idea who the mysterious sender is. All I can say is Thank You. I love them all.

Today I came back from a meeting in Old Town, and the girls had taken over the house. they welcomed me with an obama scavenger hunt!!! little Obamas were hidden all over with clues to the next one - the finale was upstairs where more Obamas awaited me with many presents - Snake in a can is one I have always wanted!! This was how I spent my Saturday night. It was a great evening. I had plans to possibly see Jackie, Jason, Maurice and Tracy, but when I got there I saw my friend Joel in the lobby. Totally random. While I got my favorite spot, right on the floor at the back end of the first turn, I spy Jimmy and John walking in. They said Joycee and Carlos were coming too!! it was amazingly serendipitous. Anyway, The DC Devil Cats took on Scare Force Once after an exhibition bout where the Cherry Blossom Bombshells obliterated the Boardwalk Brawlers from Shore Points, NJ. Just as I thought the evening was complete, the half-time show began. It was a DC troop of hula hoopers. and in the middle of it all was our friend Joel!! so awesome.

such a good booth and so few to share it with. It was a lack luster show and but it was good to see a lot of my fellow artists and catch up with them. I dropped my wallet in the Javitz and was without any cards or cash - -But my friend Julie whipped out her wallet the moment I told her I had lost mine and she fronted me a chunk of cash to get me through the week. The best part of the story is that someone had found my wallet and had mailed it back to me, sans the $700 cash, but everything else was there! so AWESOME!! anyway - I will post some pics later tonight.

I am so sorry that I have been slacking on the blog -things went crazy mid December - but what better stuff to blog about than chaos? Well, the Holiday Market Downtown was a success (very very COLD- but still good.) New Years Eve day -we had a crazy wind storm and it blew off a big chunk of my roof. I went to a crazy hat party to ring in 2009. My very bestest Tracy went off to explore a career in the non-profit world. Do not worry - -she is still around and continues to influence and support the poppi team. Carolyn officially was invited into the Peace Corps and will be leaving for Africa in June. Marissa is applying like a mad woman to graduate schools. Sherill finally completed a HUGE cut paper piece and is framing for another show in a few weeks in North Carolina. And Donut and Roger are stinky. Oh, and I began to twitter....another big distraction. And, in case you're unaware - -OBAMA is coming!!!!!!

About the show:
The Downtown Holiday Market will operate for 19 days before Christmas. It will open Friday, December 5th, and will run continuously through Tuesday, December 23rd. Hours will be from 12pm - 8pm each day.

We will again be located on the wide sidewalk of F Street, this year stretching from 7th to 9th Streets NW, in front of the National Portrait Gallery. The market fronts entrances to the Gallery Place Metro. Across the street is the Verizon Center amid the bustling 7th Street Gallery Place corridor. Opposite the Market are Hotel Monaco, the Spy Museum, and upscale restaurants.

It really is a good show and it has a nice vibe, good people, good music and the donut guy will be there!!! A nice place to support LOCAL ARTISTS. I will be there starting on THURSDAY Dec 11th - Dec 23rd. Booth # 32. come on by!

Thank you to everyone who came by to visit me in Richmond. It was kind of a tough show, with lots of unexpected drama. The first thing was that it was supposed to be in the rotunda of the Science Museum, but due to forces beyond the show's management's control, it ended up being outside in a tent. The weather was FREEZING cold and I had packed (both my wardrobe and booth) for a fancy indoor show. There weren't enough lights, the power went off during the premier and then, I woke in the middle of the night to hear my car alarm - -8 floors up. I went outside and sure enough, my window was smashed in. nothing was taken- the car was totally empty. Just random...But even after all of the drama -it turned out to be a nice show. I even saw a few old friends from school.

I leave today for the Craft + Design show in the Science Museum of Virginia. It is put on by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond (it was called The Hand Workshop when I was going to school in Richmond -years and years ago.) I am excited about the show and am looking forward to it. now all I have to do is pop everything in the car and get on down there ASAP!!! Hope to see you there!

Today was Tracy's Birthday and we celebrated the amazing woman that Tracy is. The crazy part of the celebration was that we cleaned the studio to an extent that it may not have ever been cleaned before (at least since we moved to the basement last year). She was even confused as to why she was so happy that other people's work stations were clear and uncluttered. Another Birthday bonus was the Glutten-Free carrot cake made by Carolyn. Since discovering a wheat allergy, she was sad that she would never be able to eat cake again! ☹ But, thanks to almond flour and a girl who knows how to use it - -LETS EAT CAKE TRACY!!! WE LOVE LOVE YOU!!!!!

Hey - Just so you all know...I'll be in Richmond the weekend before Thanksgiving. I'll be exhibiting at the Craft + Design show in the Science Museum of Virginia. It's going to be really weird going back to Richmond.... I graduated from VCU in the early early 90's. The school has totally changed, and as far as I can tell, VCU has taken over Broad street like nobody's business. Anyway...It should be a really good show - I will get to see a lot of my friends who will also be exhibiting, and I am bringing a bunch of my new work featuring the Vintage Lucite!

Well, I went to Paris' 20 year reunion, and let me just say that I had as much fun as if it were my own. I had minimal friends (one, two and kind of three) so, I would not have known anyone from my high school either. It was entertaining, and I walked away with a good story. I will post it at another time, when its a slow news day. Overall, I would recommend going to any high school reunion you can. They are all the same.
